2021 Supply Chain Survey Report 

SNA surveyed its school nutrition director members in the fall of 2021 to evaluate current challenges with supply chain and staffing, and assess the state of school nutrition program finances.

USDA resources

USDA continues to offer flexibilities in response to public health needs and to ease administrative burden, while still promoting nutritious meals. In August 2021, Team Nutrition released the “ Planning for a Dynamic School Environment” webpages which provided valuable information about meal service flexibilities and procurement strategies for school year (SY) 2021-2022. This web content has been updated to include additional information on waivers, P-EBT guidance, and policy documents, and is now also available as designed, printer-friendly PDF (Portable Document Format) documents. Recruiting and Retention in a Competitive World: Best Practices on How to Manage Talent Shortages- An Illustrated ANC 21 Education Session

In today’s competitive job climate, schools and school districts not only have to contend with the everyday challenges of hiring and retaining foodservice professionals, in many cases, they also have business giants such as Amazon and Costco competing for hourly workers. In addition, one of the key impacts of COVID-19 is reduced labor force across all sectors.  Pandemic stimulus, unemployment benefits and family needs have made recruiting and retention even more challenges.  At ANC 2021, industry and operator representatives who are dealing with similar issues shared best practices and strategies for recruitment and retention. SNA ANC 2021 Town Hall Live: Rebuilding Together

At ANC 2021, a town hall was held with various leaders in school nutrition about the unique challenges facing operators and industry. Topics discussed ranged from supply chain and staffing issues to costs, product availability and transportation.

SNA Praises USDA for New Waiver 

The national School Nutrition Association (SNA) thanked the U.S. Department of Agricultures (USDA) for its quick response to SNA member concerns regarding continued supply chain disruptions for school meal programs nationwide. USDA has issued a new waiver to prevent school meal programs, struggling to procure foods and supplies, from being financially penalized if shortages prevent them from meeting certain federal regulatory requirements for school meals.
